Melissa Lily
My name is Melissa Lily Lafferty, but most people call me Liz. I am a 20-year-old girl living in Warren, Michigan with my parents Sharon and Michael, younger brothers Erik and Corey, dwarf rabbits Milo and Bubbly, and hairless guinea pig Fuzzy. I work part time as a waitress at Oasis Mediterranean Cuisine on 12 mile and Mound.
I am in my third year at Wayne State University, which I attend full time on an academic scholarship. I currently maintain a 4.0 and take great pride in my hard work.
I decided that I wanted to pursue a career in social work after my freshman year of high school when I met Therese Scarpace, a LMSW at Beaumont Hospital. I had been in treatment for anorexia and bulimia nervosa and my parents had enrolled me in a group therapy program at Beaumont where Therese was one of the group coordinators. We did many activities such as crafts, self- esteem building, and discussions; and afterwards, I had decided that I would like to become some sort of social worker, as they help people improve their lives and feel better about themselves. I am currently considering a career in criminal justice social work and attending law school after I receive my MSW. I am interested in becoming a defense lawyer; but I am also interested in performing clinical therapy as a social worker. I believe that our criminal justice/legal system has many flaws and I would like to use my career in social work and law to help fix broken policies.
After spending four years of high school researching colleges with outstanding social work programs, I chose to attend Wayne State University. Wayne State's social work program is known for its success and is one of the highest ranked social work programs in the country. I believe that Wayne State University's School of Social Work Mission is going to help prepare me for entry-level practice and develop into the social worker that I wish to become by providing me with professional and field education courses, allowing me to apply knowledge by conducting research, and promote economic justice by providing leadership and service to urban communities.
Since late 2009, I have been suffering from an autoimmune disorder called fibromyalgia; so I have widespread chronic pain and fatigue almost everyday. My pain is generally at its worst in the morning; however it sometimes lasts throughout a whole day. To work around my pain, I try to only take late afternoon/night classes and classes online. I hope that throughout the years my pain will lessen and I will be able to live a more functional lifestyle.
Besides social work and law, my main passions are music and dance. I love singing and have been performing in talent shows since I was six-years-old. I also occasionally sing backups for my dad’s 80's hair band, Rockstar. I also played clarinet in my high school's wind ensemble and enjoy dabbling on the acoustic guitar and piano. Additionally, I have been dancing since I was three-years-old and am experienced in many styles of dance including ballet, jazz, lyrical, pom, hip-hop, contemporary, pointe, tap, and musical theater. I was also on my high school’s competition dance team.
For fun I like to blog and watch television. I have many favorite shows including Friends, Desperate Housewives, and Ally Mcbeal. I also love "fangirling" on tumblr and have an obsession with Jennifer Aniston and Nicollette Sheridan.
I am very much looking forward to completing my second semester of the BSW program and becoming one step closer toward my degree! Thanks for reading! :)
